A small daily ritual can be a real way to help an anxious nervous system come down out of go-mode.
I have had a shelf of these pretty little tea cups stored in my garage for years. Too pretty to use every day, so I never did. I kept waiting for some right occasion, and it never came.
Today I made matcha in one instead of getting rid of it.
How a Small Ritual Can Offer a Pause
Life gets loud. There is always so much to do. It is the small moments that help us reconnect with ourselves and stop the busy train. Lately I have been leaning on them more than I used to. Thirty seconds of whisking. The green coming up bright and a little foamy. That is it. One small thing, done slow.
It is really a signal to my body. A way of telling my nervous system, the part of me that is always scanning for the next thing to handle, that it is alright to come down out of go-mode for a minute. Nothing is on fire. Nothing needs fixing right now. Just this cup, just this.
I know that go-mode feeling from the inside, and so do a lot of the people I sit with. You get so used to bracing for what is next that stopping can feel almost unsafe, like the second you slow down everything will slip. So you keep going, and the tension just becomes normal. You stop even noticing it.
A small ritual is one way to et a keyed-up body know it’s okay to ease off, even for a minute. The warm cup in your hands. A smell you like. Your mind drops out of its spin and into this one plain thing you are doing, and the rest of you follows. It won’t fix everything, and it doesn’t have to. Some days, a pause is enough.
One Small Thing To Try
Use the nice thing today. The cup you keep saving. The candle you are waiting to have a reason to light.
Make one small thing slowly, by hand if you can, and let it be the only thing you are doing for a minute. Feel the warmth. Take one real breath. Nothing is on fire. Just this.
That is the whole practice. No app, no streak to keep, nothing to get right.
The teacups are staying, by the way. It felt good to let something beautiful be used instead of saved. You might have a version of that waiting in a cabinet somewhere too.
If you’d like a little more guidance tonight, try this free guided meditation. It uses a similar idea: naming what’s here, then settling into your body until there’s a little more room around it.
If You’re Stuck In Go-Mode
If your body is stuck in go-mode and you are not sure how to come down, that is a lot of what we work on together. Gentle, body-based somatic therapy, and never asking you to have it all figured out first. Come as you are.
I work with adults across California and Texas. If this landed, I would love to hear from you. Reach out for a free consult whenever you are ready.
Wishing you a slow cup.
